| 初めての中国国際航空,北京経由便.とても安いので結構満員.今回は助成金は使わず格安航空としました.北京で無事乗り継げるか心配でしたが.
My first time flying Air China, via Beijing. It was quite full since it was so cheap. This time I opted for a budget airline instead of using the subsidy. I was worried about whether I could make the transfer in Beijing without a hitch.

ごはんはまずまず.往復4万円台の格安航空券にしては上出来かと.
The meals were decent. Considering it was a round-trip ticket in the 40,000 yen range, it was quite good.

Which airline was this before Pejing? I had a beer called Snow Flower. I was scrambling at Beijing Airport, but since my connecting flight was delayed by 30 minutes, it worked out well in the end.

こちらは北京からチェンマイの飛行機の食事.このときもビールを飲もうとしたらなんと積んでないとか.オレンジジュースとあいなる.なんせ乗り換え時間がなくて,ラウンジで食事の時間も取れなかった.
This is the in-flight meal from Beijing to Chiang Mai. When I tried to order beer again, they said they didn't have any. So it became orange juice. After all, I had no layover time and couldn't even grab a meal at the lounge.

チェンマイへは夜10時すぎだったので,SIMを買ったあとはGrabでホテルに直行しました.なんか運転手がとても狭い道を通って,このホテルに来てくれました.すでに23時を回っていたか.
It was past 10 PM when I arrived in Chiang Mai, so after buying a SIM card, I headed straight to the hotel via GrabTaxi. Somehow the driver navigated through very narrow streets to get me to this hotel. It must have been past 11 PM already.

とりあえず部屋は広々としています.ここも結構安いホテルでした.
今回はいずれもAgodaで予約しました.
The room is spacious, at least. This was also a fairly cheap hotel.

がぴったりする風景です.実はチェンマイはこれまで結構来ているのですが,ほとんど大学とホテルの往復だけで,まともに観光したことがなかったのです.や
はり観光で人気のある街だけのことはあります.外国人が本当に多いです.
The next day, having arrived a day earlier than planned, I did a little sightseeing in the old town. It's partially surrounded by walls like this. The English word “fort” fits this scenery better than “wall.” Actually, I've been to Chiang Mai quite a few times before, but I'd mostly just gone back and forth between the university and the hotel, never really sightseeing properly. It certainly lives up to its reputation as a popular tourist city. There are truly a lot of foreigners here.

Tired from walking, I took a break at a cafe overlooking the city walls. The cappuccino was incredibly delicious and a bargain at 40 baht.

I had a pretty good cappuccino. It's a tourist spot, but not overly expensive. A young woman made it for me.

きれいです.いつも夕食などを買いに来ます.でもこの信号,複雑なシステムで,わたるのに5分くらい待たされることがあります.とても困ります.
This is MAYA, the largest shopping mall in Chiang Mai, right next to the hotel where I'm staying. The winter decorations for Christmas are already up and very beautiful. I always come here to buy dinner and such. But this traffic light has a complicated system, and sometimes you have to wait about five minutes to cross. It's really troublesome

宿まで迎えにきたいただいた,生物のMind先生と附属高校の玄関.こちらの乾季でとても清々しい気温と晴れた空が気持ちいいです.

私が授業をする物理教室の外の様子.地平線近くまで青い空なのは,まだ乾季の初めでそれほどPM2.5の影響が出ていないからだと思われます.昨年訪れた2月初旬では少しスモッグで曇っていました.
The view outside the physics classroom where I teach. The sky is blue all the way to the horizon, likely because it's still early in the dry season and the effects of PM2.5 aren't as pronounced yet. When I visited in early February last year, it was slightly hazy with smog.

さて,30名の高校2年生を相手に今回新たに作った,ミャンマー地震の震源決定の実習です.理科の先生が見に来てくれていいます.結構読み取りが難しいので,あらかじめこちらでPとSの位相を指定する形で行った.
Well then, —this is the newly created practical exercise on determining the epicenter of the Myanmar earthquake, conducted with 30 second-year high school students. The science teacher has come to observe. Since the readings are quite difficult to interpret, we pre-specified the P and S wave phases beforehand.

距離がある地震なので,大森係数は10とした.これでほぼぴったりの位置に震央が決まる.これはなかなか達成感があるもよう.自作地震計の記録も2地点のものを含める.事前に見せたM校での揺れが到着した瞬間の動画もなかなか迫力があり生徒の関心を惹いた.ひ
Since this was a distant earthquake, the Omori coefficient was set to 10. This pinpoints the epicenter almost perfectly. This seems to give them quite a sense of accomplishment. Records from the homemade seismometer also include data from two locations. The video shown beforehand of the moment the shaking arrived at M School was quite powerful and captured the students' interest.

| さて今日の実習です.おなじみの地震の統計.G-R則の確認です.最初簡単にできるだろうと思ったら.縦軸の個数が結構難しかったようです.午後の後半のクラスでは,最初にこの縦軸に目盛りを書くことから始めて,かなり作業がはかどりました.Now, today's lab session. The familiar earthquake statistics. Verifying the G-R law. At first, I thought it would be simple enough. But the number of points on the vertical axis turned out to be quite difficult. In the latter half of the afternoon class, we started by marking the scale on this vertical axis first, and the work progressed quite smoothly. |
おなじみの碁石モデルと砂山モデル.いずれも少しの時間ですが,遊んでもらいました.やはりこうしたゲームは,辛気臭い統計の話にはうってつけです.
The familiar Go game model and sand pile model. Though only briefly, I had them play with them. Indeed, such games are perfect for livening up boring statistical discussions. |

| ここの高校に置いた地震計は随分初期のもので,かなりくたびれていたのを前回の訪問で見つけたので,今回思い切って作り直したものを事前に航空便で送付しました.これも今年いただいている助成金のおかげです.The seismometer installed at this high school was quite an early model and had become quite worn out, which I discovered during my last visit. So this time, I decided to rebuild it and sent the new unit ahead by airmail. This was also made possible thanks to the grant we received this year. |
かなり厳重に梱包したのですが,航空郵便で荷物を送るときの常で,やはり部品が破損したようです.あとで写真で紹介します.
I packed it very securely, but as is often the case with airmail shipments, some parts appear to have been damaged. I'll show photos later. |

の3台が古い設置の地震計.手前が新しく作ったものです.古い設計のものは初期の3Dプリンタモデルなので,随所に問題があり,また設置当初から東西動の
信号が弱く,この原因解明ができないまま,以前の訪問時は放置したまま帰国したのです.今回はアンプ基板も作り直して持参しました.手前の地震計に重りが
ないのは,送るのに重くなるので,重りだけは古いものを外して取り付ける予定です(しかしこれが実は大変で,時間がかかった).
The three units in the back are the old installed seismometers. The one in front is the newly built one. The older design was an early 3D-printed model, so it had issues throughout. Also, from the moment it was installed, the east-west motion signal was weak. We couldn't figure out why, so during our previous visit, we left it as is and returned home. This time, we also rebuilt the amplifier board and brought it along. The seismometer in the foreground doesn't have its weights attached because shipping them would have made it too heavy. We plan to remove the weights from the old one and attach them later (though this turned out to be quite a hassle and took a lot of time).

せっかく,かなり用心して詰め物をあてがい,航空便で送ったのですが,一部の部品がごらんのように破損していました.こちらの学校のT先生が写真を送ってくれたので,今郵便局に保険での補償を申請中です.
Despite taking great care to pad the items and shipping them by air, some parts were damaged as you can see. Mr. T from the school here sent photos, so we are currently filing an insurance claim with the post office.

化した高校(SCiUSという大学が科学教育に協力している高校の一つです)だけに,こうした作業に素早く対処できる,Factory
Teacherがおられます.As you can see, it broke quite easily. So, we gave the files for the 3D printer to the responsible teacher at the factory here and had them urgently produce the parts. True to being a high school specialized in science (SCiUS is one of the high schools where the university cooperates in science education), they have a Factory Teacher who can handle such tasks quickly. |

学生寮なのでこの日授業がなかった20名を越える生徒が寮の食堂に集まってくれています.彼らとこのあと,地震計の観測やメンテ処理をしてくれるGroupLineを作ってもらいました.一人だけ女子が参加してくれています.
Since it's a student dormitory, over 20 students who didn't have classes that day gathered in the dorm cafeteria. Afterwards, I had them form a GroupLine to handle seismometer observations and maintenance. One girl participated.

こちらは上下動の組み立てです.これも結構面倒な作業ですが,みんな興味深々の様子です.大きなレーザーカッターがあれば,この組み立ても簡単になるのですが,まあ仕方ない.そのうちタイのどこかの高校に,パトロンを見つけます.
This is the assembly of the vertical motion component. It's quite a tedious task, but everyone seems fascinated. A
large laser cutter would make this assembly much easier, but oh well.
Someday we'll find a patron for one at a high school somewhere in
Thailand.

出力端子にコイルからの配線を取り付けているところだったか.私の持参したUSB給電のモバイルハンダコテがこんなところで役立ちました.ちなみにこのUSB給電は容量の小さい普通のものではだめで,PD対象という器具が必要です.今回初めて知りました.
I think they were attaching the wiring from the coil to the output terminal. My USB-powered mobile soldering iron came in handy here. By the way, a regular low-capacity USB power supply won't work for this; you need a PD-compatible device. I learned that for the first time this time.

う一つ壊れた部品があって,これはこちらの先生が工夫して,プラスティック定規をカットして,補強の板を作って,接着剤で固定しているところです.これは
助かりました.ただこちらの寮には,工具がほとんどなく,私が持参した工具類と,金のこの刃だけで修理作業を続けました.
Another broken part was found, and this teacher here devised a solution: cutting a plastic ruler to make a reinforcement plate, which he fixed in place with adhesive. This was a great help. However, there were almost no tools available in this dormitory, so I continued the repair work using only the tools I brought with me and this iron blade. |

HPの観測に用いていたPCの処理速度がとても遅くなっていたので,思い切ってPCを初期化(工場出荷に戻す)しているところです.これでかなり処理が早くなった印象です.これもこちらのAtom君という高3の学生と,物理のT先生が協力して,行ってくれました.
The HP PC using observations had become extremely slow, so I decided to reset it to factory settings. This seems to have significantly sped up processing. This was also done with the help of a M6 high school student nicknamed Atom-kun and Mr. T, the physics teacher.

測可能な状態に.これは熱心な生徒が,水平動の裏のねじを調整して,振り子を中央に持ってくる作業を行っています.右に立っているのが,今回の私の訪問を
全部取り仕切っていただいた,物理のT先生です.今回も本当にお世話になりました.画面のプログラムも全部新しいものに交換しました.すべてClaude
AIと私が協力して作った新しいプログラムです.紫色のストライプはチェンマイ大学のスクールカラーを模したものです.T先生も着ていますね.この部分の
色を学校ごとに替えて,画面を見れば,すぐにどこの高校かわかるようにする予定です.
The size of the parts I brought didn't quite match, causing delays in replacing the weights. Work that started in the morning stretched until around 3 PM. Still, the effort paid off, and we managed to get it into an observable state. Here, a dedicated student is adjusting the screw behind the horizontal movement to center the pendulum. Standing on the right is Mr. T, the physics teacher who managed my entire visit this time. Once
again, I am truly grateful for all their help. We also replaced all the
programs on the screen. These are all new programs created
collaboratively by Claude AI and myself. The purple stripes are modeled
after Chiang Mai University's school colors. You can see Mr. T wearing
them too. We plan to change this color section for each school so that
just by looking at the screen, you can immediately tell which high
school it is.

苦労して何とか交換して取り付けた重りとセットした地震計.左の上下動は送付した重りだけでは,重さが若干足りずに,石を乗せてバランスを調整してあります.このあたりの調整さぎょうもこれから,GLの生徒にお願いするつもりです.
The seismometer I worked hard to replace and install, complete with weights. The vertical movement on the left required additional stones to balance it, as the shipped weights alone were slightly insufficient. I plan to have GL students handle these adjustment tasks going forward.

終的に完成した地震計設置場所の寮の食堂の横にある集会室.地上と同じ高さなので,地震観測にはとてもよい環境が期待されます.今ノイズが入っているのは
空気の移動によるもので,早急にカバーを作ってくれるそうです.Atom君はとても優秀で,停電時に自動復帰できるように,Windowsの起動ソフトに
地震計の観測プログラムを登録してくれました.これであとは地震が観測されるのを待つばかりとなりました.チェンマイは結構局所的な地震もあり,タイ国内
では地震活動の活発な場所だけに,よい記録が録れるのを期待しています.
The meeting room next to the dormitory cafeteria, the final installation site for the seismometer. Being at ground level, it offers an excellent environment for seismic observation. The
current noise is caused by air movement, and they say they will make a
cover for it soon. Atom-kun is very capable; he registered the
seismometer observation program in the Windows startup software so it
can automatically resume operation after a power outage. Now, all that's
left is to wait for earthquakes to be observed. Chiang Mai experiences
quite a few localized earthquakes, and since it's an area with active
seismic activity within Thailand, we expect to get good recordings.
