NST-KVIS_Part_2

At last, it's here........ Nakhon Si Thammarat. Nakhon Si Thammarat is a city by the sea in southern Thailand. Focus Sensei, a physics teacher) at PCSHS (too long to write above) took me to a hotel in the center of the city, but it was so luxurious that I felt dizzy (laugh). It was a luxury hotel that I was not accustomed to, and I had a hard time filling the bathtub with hot water. However, there is no microwave anywhere, no washing machine, and have to ask laundry service, etc., so it seems to rank differently from the cheap hotels I often use on my tours. It will take some time to get used to this. Yesterday was the last class at Loei, and when I returned to the astronomy room in the afternoon after the class, a student sang Happy Birthday to me a day early. It seems that my teacher, Songkan Sensei had seen my date of birth on my passport, which I had left with him to buy an airline ticket. I was touched by his warm consideration. At my age, I don't have any feelings for birthdays, but this year was very special.

Now that I have finally taken a break from my work at the high school (PCSHS NST), I would like to give a short report on what has been going on since my arrival here at the school. First of all, I reported my arrival last Saturday up to the luxurious hotel, but the following Sunday was spent assembling the seismograph. On Monday, after teaching the students, we drove to the beach where the FOB (FUKUTOKU OKA NOBA pumice) was found. This was a very difficult place. Here is a video of it. After that, on Tuesday and Wednesday, I taught 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon to the students. Yesterday, I talked about seismographs and seismic records, and today, I talked about how to identify rocks and observe flakes in geology. Both classes included hands-on practice. Tomorrow, we are going on a field trip from early morning. My English brain was fine for a while after arriving here, but now that I am here, fatigue has set in and I am having some difficulty remembering English words that usually come up. I am also struggling with the slow and unstable wifi of the luxurious hotel. Here is my report with videos and photos. I have a lot of pictures and videos, but I have to leave very early tomorrow, so I'll show only a few today. I will show you the rest tomorrow.

I arrived in Bangkok at 1:00 p.m. from Loei and had time to much before my flight at 6:00 p.m. I used Priority Pass Card for the first time in 3 years. This is the Coral Lounge in the domestic restricted area of Don Mueang Airport. I read on the internet that there is no alcohol, but the food is good. The Miracle lounge has more drinks and food. However, this lounge is not crowded, so it's nice and relaxing. There are two kinds of food: keema curry and red soup. The red soup was spicy but tasty.

Now I had more than enough time, so I wandered around the airport looking for alcohol, but gave up when I noticed the 2:00-5:00 hell (in Thailand, alcohol sales are regulated during this time in the afternoon, but only in supermarkets and brand-name stores). Beer was available in the lounge. This is the Miracle lounge next to the Coral lounge. I haven't had a Singha beer in a while! After that, I had a cappuccino and thought I wanted another can, but they were out of Singha beer, so I had another can of Chang, which I usually have.

Pizza at my birthday party from students yesterday. Songkran Sensei went all the way to Looi to buy it. Thank you for his kindness. Thanks also to the students who stayed and sang a song to celebrate.

From Loei to Bangkok. After another four-hour layover, we went to NST, where we connected to a domestic flight. I took a domestic flight on Lion Air for the first time in five years. I had heard that the baggage weight limit was very strict, but since I had 30kg checked baggage, there was no measurement at all. The information on the Internet is very unreliable. However, as soon as I arrived at the airport, the humidity was a bit oppressive. After all, this is southern Thailand. It was rainy season, so it was very different from Loei, which was cool and dry. My journey continues from the north to the south of Thailand.

I arrived at Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport after dark on a late flight. I am sure I will meet a teacher from PCSHS Nakhon Si Thammarat who is waiting for me. It was after 7 o'clock in the evening.

I met Focus sensei, counter part of me. After shopping for dinner at Lotus, I arrived at the hotel reserved for my stay. It's a very luxurious hotel that makes me dizzy. I'm afraid I'm going to be taken care of again.

img_4507.jpg img_4509.jpg

Granite vanity. But with a hotel of this size, I have to worry about the need for tips every day.

A good hotel with a bathtub. It's been a while since I tried to soak in the bathtub, but I had a hard time filling it with hot water. There are no instructions. After a lot of effort, the bathtub was finally filled. It is the first time for me to take a relaxing soak in the bathtub.

img_4505.jpg img_4564d.jpg

I bought a frozen pizza at Lotus across the street from the hotel, but they don't have a microwave, so I walked back to Lotus and had a Kentucky dinner. I'll put the rest in the fridge until tomorrow, but I'm thinking of borrowing a microwave oven from Lotus tomorrow evening.

The morning buffet is gorgeous, as one would expect. There is a Thai-style rice dish, but I'm going to use bread, which I'm used to. I had an omelette with ham, cheese, etc. baked for me, and a cup of strong drip coffee, just like in India. It rained for about three days after we arrived.

img_4531.jpg img_4540.jpg

When I first arrived at the school, it was raining like this all the time. Unlike the northern part of Thailand, the rainy season is from November to December in the southern part of Thailand. I did not know this.

In windy places along the coast... You can see the windmills along the coast. Thailand is an oil-producing country, but it seems to have been tackling environmental problems from the very beginning.

First, we will go to the place where the teachers collected FOB pumice from the beach in spring. This is the road to the beach about 50 km south of the school, with the ocean just to the left. This happens frequently during the rainy season. Looking over the low embankment on the left. You can see high waves sometimes. The driver is going fast on this extremely dangerous road!

Finally, this is the place where the school teachers collected FOB before. As you can see, the high waves, wind and rain were so bad that my umbrella and hat were almost blown off, and my pants were soaked, but I did collect the FOB! The video is long, but I edited it. Due to the rising sea level caused by global warming and the stormy weather peculiar to the rainy season, the beach looks like a beach in the middle of a typhoon.

img_4542.jpg img_4562[1].jpg

So I found a dense FOB area without incident! Almost all of them are FOB pumice. The black chocolate chips are a distinctive feature. It is so exciting to think that it took more than a year to cross the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea all the way to Japan! The diameter of the lid of the water bottle used as a scale is exactly 3 cm.

As you can see in previous photo, I collected these FOB to provide to a researcher I know. There is a lot of garbage in it.

This is a photo of this beach taken this spring by this professor. The weather seems to be much calmer than when we were there.

This is a picture of FOB pumices that was washed up on the beach. The black streaks are them. The sea is very calm, unlike the sea in my movie. It is hard to believe that this is the same place.

Here is the FOB pumice stone at this beach this spring. Can you see the black chocolate chips? I have been studying this pumice with a friend of mine, Mr. S, who specializes in volcanic geology.

Kung sensei and her colleagues, who specialize in chemistry, collected many FOB pumice from the beach in response to our request. Kung sensei also gave us a series of photos of the beach.

At school, we assembled the seismographs. However, a third-year student, M-kun helped me a lot and assembled almost all of the seismographs at the end. He has a Japanese relative who wants to work in Japan in the future.

Most of the students helped to make their own polarizing units to be donated to the school. 10 sets were completed. The initiative of the students was amazing! They stayed with me for the rest of the lecture.

こちらは例の自作のiPhoneXV(実は糸電話!)

I showed the students my iPhoneXV (actually a string phone!) and talked about what science is all about.

I explain about the rocks hidden in the school garden. Of course, I have to chip the rock a little with a hammer to explain the difference between the surface and the interior. The photo was given to me by this teacher.

This is a picture of an experiment that probably no one but me noticed, in which CO2 bubbles were generated by pouring hydrochloric acid on limestone paving stones in the parking lot of the school.

Of course, bubbles do not appear at all from the brownish rock you see (probably mudstone or something), which is not limestone. They seemed to understand this difference well.

img_4610.jpg img_4614.jpg

As you can see, there are many dogs in this school. They are used to people and are always lounging in the hallways. A very noisy sight!

Three biological microscopes with polarizing units. The polarizing units are set up on three biological microscopes that were provided by the company, and the Olympus polarizing microscope in the foreground, which was donated by the company, is also used for observation. Since the number of microscopes is limited, each microscope is photographed, and sketches are made on the basis of the photographs. This method was very effective when the number of microscopes was limited.

img_4620.jpg img_4617.jpg

Sketching from a tablet photo. This method seems to be good because we can sketch calmly at our seats. I tell the students in advance the basics of sketching (drawing in lines, dots, not everything needs to be drawn, etc.). I tell them in advance what to do, etc.).

This is a sketch using a smartphone photo. In the upper left corner is a model sketch. I encourage them to follow the model sketch. They are all very good at it. I tell the students in advance that they will get a copy of this original sketch and take it home as a souvenir of my visit.

img_4622.jpg img_4629.jpg

What made me very happy this time was that M in blue (3rd grade student, color of his clothes is determined by his grade. He was the student who helped me assemble the seismograph and quickly mastered all the maintenance procedures. He is now explaining to the teacher how to read the flakes for me. His ability is amazing! He is eager to work as an engineer in Japan in the future.

On the far left is Focus sensei, the physics specialist who has been taking care of me all this time. He studied physical geology at university and is very knowledgeable about geology and plate tectonics. Of course, he also teaches geoscience in this school. Before becoming a teacher at this school, he taught programming such as MatLab. The female teacher on the right is also physics teacher Dream sensei, and both of them are young teachers who have only been at this school for a short period of time.

img_4596d.jpg img_4635.jpg

The seismograph was safely installed in the innovation room on the 2nd floor, and Dr. F is going to make an acrylic cover for it. Still, it is expected to record earthquakes since it is close to Indonesia and other countries.

PCSHS(プリンセス・チュラボーン・サイエンス・ハイスクール)は タイ国内に全部で12校の姉妹校があります.

PCSHS (Princess Chulabhorn Science High School) has a total of 12 sister schools in Thailand. I will visit the Chonburi school in 2016, the Chiang Rai school in 2018, the Mukdahan school in 2019, and the Loei school this year. This school is the fifth school of my visiting. It was a beautiful day after three days of rain. The rainy season is about to end.

I was given a fruit, which is a specialty of this region, when I went out by car for something. They are similar to Japanese summer oranges, but much larger.

The fruit inside is even bigger, redder and sweeter than summer oranges. They were quite tasty. I have not seen this fruit in other parts of the country. As one would expect, food is abundant in the southern part of Thailand.

The decorations in the lobby of the hotel, where we are greeted every morning, are now in full Christmas mode.

It's a very luxurious hotel lobby. I am very grateful for the accommodations I have been given.
